What’s Inside: “The Year in Review” takes a fun look at what we’ve been up to this year on the blog.
The Year in Review
This post is your chance to catch up on what’s been happening here at Self Educating Family. I encourage you all to take a moment and see where you’ve been and where you are going also. I started the year with the wrap-up to the 2023 Reading Challenge. I’ll start next year with a new challenge.
Meanwhile, what happened in between?
46 posts
This year we posted 46 articles for you to peruse. Not a single one was on vocabulary! Might have to change that next year. Need more vicissitude next year, right? Or maybe just more cowbell.
As you know, I post in 3 broad categories:
- Learning: 12 Posts
- Homeschooling: 18 Posts
- DIY Handicraft Skills: 16 Posts
So that’s exciting. At least to me. Perhaps I lead a dull life. Sometimes dull is good.
Most Quotable
Quote Posts are extremely popular here. 7 new quote posts over the course of 2024! From Gratitude to Nature to History, we’ve covered a lot of territory. Look! a nice word cloud with all the quotes used in 2024 to see what the biggest themes were.
I like that “learn” was the biggest theme.
Accordingly, I added a few quote pins to this post. I like to collect well-written words and I use one of my Pinterest boards as a commonplace notebook. It doesn’t substitute for the actual hand-written notebook, but I have fun with the digital version. Follow me if you are on Pinterest.
Charlotte in 2024
Charlotte Mason (CM) had 28 posts related to her. And Handicraft had 16 posts. But there’s a lot of crossover there. Like the discussion of “Staying within the compass” – a key component of CM teaching and handicraft in particular.
CM not related to Handicraft
There were a few posts that were strictly CM without handicraft, including:
- Nature Journal Prompts: Contains ideas for what to put in a nature journal when you are stuck or in a rut
- Charlotte Mason Narration: Includes a free trouble shooting guide
- Ideas to Uplift Your Relations with Morning Basket Time: A Discussion of Principle #12: Education is the Science of Relations
Handicraft with no mention of Charlotte
There were a few instances where a handicraft post didn’t mention Charlotte Mason much at all.
- Top 3 Ways How to Use Essential Oils to Scent a Shower
- My Favorite Microgreens to Grow
- Most recently, the 12 Days of Giving post. This has all kinds of new freebies, including some handicraft related items.
And speaking of Freebies
I do like to give away free stuff! Maybe you’ve had a chance to check out the recently revamped Freebies library. I send the access code in my email newsletters, so sign up today if you haven’t had a chance.
Besides the new freebies added in the 12 Days of Giving, you will find free bookmarks, copywork, guides, and more!
In-Depth Nature Study
We looked at nature study broadly this year: 18 posts including the following:
- Planning for Learning Outdoors: helps you make your plans based on the time you have available.
- Can I take my Dog on a Nature Walk? (short answer: yes!)
- Digging Deeper with Charlotte Mason Nature Study: gets a little more in-depth to help your nature studies go smoothly.
What about the Bard?
Shakespeare is one of my favorite topics to write about. But apparently not this year! I’ll have to correct that in 2025!
You will have to be content with a beautiful free bookmark with a quote from Richard III. But your will need to sign up for the newsletter!
2024 out and 2025 in
I hope you’ve enjoyed this look at where we were in 2025. Besides Shakespeare and vocabulary, be on the lookout for that friendly book challenge in 2025. Not quite as comprehensive as the 2023 Challenge issued by my son, but one with a different flair.
See you in 2025!
