Gratitude Quotes

Here are a selection of quotes about Thanksgiving or gratitude from my commonplace notebook. I selected these quotes from a large variety of sources, like hymn study:

  • “Come, ye thankful people, come.” The opening lines to Harvest Home by Henry Alford. Even just writing those words can make me hear the song!

If you are unfamiliar with the song, here’s a nice choral version of it by the Chet Valley Churches in the UK:

The Quotes

Whimsy

I threw in 2 whimsical quotes because we all need more smiles in our lives. Hence the Piglet and Garfield quotes. And, really, that’s about as grateful as Garfield gets. We can do better. But it still makes me laugh!

  • Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude. —A.A.Milne
  • Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread and pumpkin pie. — Jim Davis, Garfield at Large.

Shakespeare

It’s hard to pick just one Shakespeare quote so here are a few of my favorites on thanks:

  • O Lord that lends me life, Lend me a heart replete with thankfulness! —William Shakespeare, Henry VI
  • I can no other answer make but thanks, And thanks, and ever thanks. —William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night
  • If ever I thank any man, I’ll thank you. —William Shakespeare, As You Like It
