#LifeSkillsNow Summer Camp

It’s time to get ready — registration opens for Katie Kimball’s #LifeSkillsNow summer camp in June. Get early access to a dozen workshops right now.

Note: If you are reading this and the camp is over, you can console yourself with Katie’s free knife course that’s always available.

What is this summer camp?

My friend Katie has run a virtual summer camp for several seasons. It’s jam-packed with mini-workshops that build practical life skills in bite-sized sessions.

As a fellow parent dedicated to raising well-rounded, resilient kids, I want to share this camp with you. It’s completely free for one week in June.

Now, I know that you know I am opposed to screen time for developing brains, but I think this is a tool you can judiciously use as a family to model how to learn from video lessons. Screens are going to be a part of your kid’s world, so let’s use the tool wisely. There are even some tech-savvy lessons on how to do that.

So how can an online camp help to get screens out of our kids’ hand this summer?

You will use technology to teach real-world skills. #LifeSkillsNow camp serves up QUICK, curated videos and then sends your kids off to implement with creativity and hands-on action.

Instead of passive scrolling, it’s productive learning.

Teaching Life skills to our kids is part of our parental privilege. This is a fun way to explore over a hundred ideas. If your kids enjoy one particular area, you can add that to your “Handicrafts We Want to Learn” list!

What I like about #LifeSkillsNow

  1. I like that #LifeSkillsNow really details practical “chore” type skills. From ironing to chopping, from changing a tire to how to write an email… the summer camp covers a wide variety so everyone is bound to find something engaging to learn. The skills your kids learn will help out in the family.
  2. Tiny lessons with “challenges” at the end. The whole set up minimizes video time and maximizes doing time. Learning by doing is a great way to learn.
  3. The age range. The videos and lessons are arranged by topic AND by appropriate age range. The lessons cover preschoolers to high schoolers — and there are parent lessons too! I like that there is something for everyone. Your littles won’t be left out while your high schoolers can engage in topics that are pertinent to their needs.

One Possible Downside to #LifeSkillsNow

The one downside is that it is a video camp. I honestly prefer a vacation from all screens, but if you have to do video, then this is a great option. Just be sure to add in a “beach” or “pool” day because that’s what summer camp really means, right?

At least #LifeSkillsNow concentrates on the practical doing. Even I have to admit that I’ve learned a lot from Youtube videos — nothing says happiness like unclogging your washing machine drain system with the aid of someone who knows how to take the pieces apart AND putting them back again!
