Books
- Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsworth Comstock
- Keeping a Nature Journal: Observing, Recording, Drawing the World Around You by Claire Walker Leslie
- Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards
- Drawing With Children: A Creative Method for Adult Beginners, Too by Mona Brookes
Artist Supplies
These can all be found at your local craft store or at Dick Blick online, as well as the Amazon links provided. You don’t need all of these at once. It depends what you want to do. But you do not need any of these to get started or to complete this 5-day challenge.
- Watercolor Brush Pens by Mr. Pen. These are amazingly fun. But the fat tips are hard to do using dry brush technique. You need the smallest size possible and you have to learn not to squeeze out lots of water. But your littlest nature students usually love these. Your oldest can probably master how to use them for dry brush.
- Watercolor Paintbrush Size 0. This is what you need to learn drybrush watercolor technique. A bit outside the scope of this course, but if you have mixed age kids, you may want to let the oldest or the most advanced artists focus on this technique while those newer to nature study use the basic techniques.
- Felt Tip Pens by Flair
- Watercolor Pencils: we like Faber Castell
- Watercolor Paint: You really only need the primary colors. They come in tubes.
- Watercolor Travel Palette
- Notebook. We like Strathmore sketch pads. Be sure to get the size most convenient for your adventures.

Drybrush watercolor technique
While outside the scope of this course, your advanced students may benefit. Your youngest ones will too, but the technique of using just enough paint on the brush to draw with a brush is harder than it looks!
